Arresting the film image, literally deterritorializing the setting by transposing it from film to photography, all the while severing its narrative bond and offering it back to us emptied of action and characters, Bernard’s photographs retrieve or recover what some of us might have otherwise missed in our haste: landscapes that we can contemplate. And in the process, ‘Ask the Dust’ helps us to envisage just how such landscapes haunt narrative films.
